At the very end of our video noted above, we have included a view of a vintage postcard showing Ralet jumping. Ralet was born on Feb. 25th, 1930 at the famous W.K. Kellogg (of Cereal Fame) Arabian Horse Ranch in Pomona, California. This statue of Ralet was probably made sometime around 1938–1941.
I have shown a book on Gladys Brown Edwards Equine Works in Metal by Carolyn Martin in some of the photographs and video of this statue because she featured 'her own' statue of Ralet on the cover of her book on GBE, also because Carolyn Martin is probably one of the most knowledgeable authorities on GBE’s metal figurine works, especially those of horses. (Book is not included).
The statue is 7-1/2” long overall and 6-1/4” high from desktop to top of ears. When we found this exceptional statue, it had not been taken care of and was extremely dirty and grimy. We cleaned the statue with plain soap, water and a toothbrush. We then applied a coat of baby oil per Carolyn Martin's recommendation in her book (we used unscented baby oil), bringing the statue finish back to a nice rich lustre.
The original felt base and backerboard was in poor condition (see photo & video) and we felt we couldn’t offer this great statue with its base in that condition, so we purchased new high strength backerboard along with new felt and replaced the base.
There are some marks on the base that were acquired during its nearly 80 years of being moved around but they are not serious nor objectionable (at least in our opinion).
The statue has an aged majestic appearance. Normal wear & tear is to be expected on the statue from being moved around & bumped during his 80 years existence, i.e a slight (virtually unnoticeable bump) on his nose, left side (Dodge defect?) etc. This is not a new statue that just came out of a box. It is a rare, vintage statue of Ralet!
The copper flashing showing on Ralets head, mane, tail & other areas that may show bright copper/gold color flashing are part of Dodge’s intentional design and is not a worn surface defect. Carolyn Martin has noted this design aspect in her book as well.
The statue is very well made, weighing 2lbs 11oz!
